Small businesses on the rise
Published:  January 2008

In the next 12 months, small businesses expect to increase the overall number of employees, based on a survey.

Sixty percent of senior executives and managers at small businesses expect an increase in employment, according to the worldwide survey of 180 senior executives and managers conducted by NFI Research of Madbury.

Small businesses are those with fewer than 500 employees.

Employment outlook for large businesses, those with 10,000 or more employees, is not looking as good with only 32 percent of senior executives and managers expecting an increase.

Thirty-two percent of large businesses expect a decrease in employment while only 6 percent of small businesses expect the same.

"This looks to be a great time to be a small business, since that's where the growth action is," said NFI Research CEO Chuck Martin.

Overall, businesses where employment is increasing, the top reasons are business increase (76 percent) and expansion (41 percent).

Businesses where employment is decreasing, the top reasons are downsizing (54 percent), current economic conditions (46 percent) and business efficiency (38 percent).
