NAMES AND FACES - August 2006
ROBERT SHAINES, president of SHAINES & MCEACHERN, P.A., of Portsmouth, announced that STEVEN F. HYDE, formerly of the Law Offices of Steven F. Hyde, P.L.L.C., of Dover, has joined the firm as a general practice lawyer whose practice focuses in the areas of real estate, landlord and tenant, small business, and civil litigation.
Shaines said Hyde brings to Shaines & McEachern, “a skill set that will enable that division to represent lenders, buyers and sellers in residential real estate transactions throughout New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. ”
Hyde received his B.A. from the University of New Hampshire and his J.D. from the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. He was admitted to the New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts Bars in 2002.
Co-associate editor VIRGINIA STUART of the University of New Hampshire Magazine received a national bronze medal for best article of the year from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s 2006 Circle of Excellence Awards.
The article, “The Not-So-Elusive Modern Moose: Easy to Find But a Challenge to Manage,” described how New Hampshire’s increasing moose population is providing UNH professors and students opportunities to study moose behavior and to test theories of moose management. Stuart’s article was chosen from 265 entries from across the nation. In the past, the University of New Hampshire Magazine has received CASE gold medals for most improved magazine and for best magazine; a silver medal for best article of the year; and a bronze medal for best periodical staff writing.

PETER DICKS, MD, FACP, CMD, will join PAUL BERRY, MD, as co-medical director at DOVER REHABILITATION AND LIVING CENTER.
Dicks and Berry are both certified medical directors and members of the American Medical Directors Association. Dicks is a staff physician at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital and Portsmouth Wound Care Center. He has also been acting medical director for Seacoast Hospice in Rockingham and Strafford County. In addition, Dicks serves as a physician quality and utilization reviewer for Medicare and Champus. He was nominated as outstanding resident-teacher while completing his internal medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Menneapolis, MN. Dicks is certified with the Fellow of American College of Physicians; Diplomat, American board of Internal Medicine; Diplomat, National Board of Medical Examiners; and holds memberships with the American Geriatric Society, American Academy of Home Care Physicians, American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians.
SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY has named JAMES J. WINN as its new director of public safety. Winn replaces GEORGE MIVILLE, who served as the university’s public safety director for two decades.
Winn is a 22-year veteran of the Manchester Police Department, who most recently held the position of captain. In 2004, Winn earned the Manchester Police Department Service Award for 20 years of dedicated service to the Manchester community. He was also recognized in 2003 by the New Hampshire attorney general for his role as the lead investigator in a double homicide.
The founder of SALES PROTOCOL INTERNATIONAL of Portsmouth, CATHERINE BLAKE, participated in a training mission by New Hampshire’s Air National Guard’s KC-135 Stratotanker. The flight accomplished a training mission that included a second KC-135 flying one mile behind a third plane, being refueled over the Canadian border. The flight opportunity was made available through Leadership Seacoast, a non-profit organization with the mission to introduce individuals to community issues, leadership practices, and opportunities to explore personal involvement in action. Blake dedicated the flight opportunity to her late father, a retired U.S. Naval Aviator and veteran.
CITIZENS BANK of Massachusetts announced that DEBRA DEVENNE-ZARBA has been promoted to senior vice president.
Devenne-Zarba manages the Boston North commercial lending team. She is responsible for developing new business and maintaining a $160 million commercial loan portfolio. Devenne-Zarba joined Citizens Bank in 2000. She has worked at Cambridge Savings Bank, Boston Private Bank & Trust and Medord Savings Bank. Devenne-Zarba resides with her husband in Atkinson.
The owner of GRANITE STATE HOME IMPROVEMENTS of Northfield announced that two staff members have received certification from The Vinyl Siding Institute in vinyl siding installation. PEGGY AREND said that MIKE FRENCH and WAYLON MERWIN completed a course of study and examination on the proper installation techniques for vinyl siding, soffit and accessories. Both the course and test are verified by an independent certification firm, Architectural Testing, Inc., and based on industry standards. French and Merwin both have years of experience in both residential and commercial vinyl siding installations, which have included the Franklin Baptist Church in Franklin, and Rockingham Apartments in Farmington.
DONNA BRASSARD, publisher of the biweekly business publication MAINEBIZ, has been named vice president of its parent company Worcester Publishing Ltd. Brassard has been the publisher of Mainebiz since 1999. Prior to her position at Mainebiz, Brassard worked as the associate publisher at the Worcester Business Journal. She has also worked for other publications, including Better Home & Gardens, Early American Life, Country Home and Country Journal.
RE/MAX PERFORMANCE in Exeter has hired JULIE THOM as a full-time realtor. Before joining Re/Max Performance, Thom received recognition as a top producing real estate agent in 2004 and 2005. Prior to real estate Thom spent 12 years co-managing and operating her family owned franchise. Thom also volunteers in the Exeter school system.
ROBIN ROUSSEAU has joined iBASIS, INC. in Portsmouth as director of internal audit. Prior to joining iBasis, Rousseau was the director of internal audit for Ultak, Inc. in Dallas. Rousseau is a certified public accountant with a background in Sarbanes Oxley compliance management. Rousseau graduated with an international business degree from Southern New Hampshire University.
DIANE LATTIME of Seabrook was honored by the senior executives of AVON during an all-expenses paid trip to Cancun, Mexico, for being one of the “best of the best” Avon representatives in the United States. Lattime was awarded the “jewel of the Caribbean” trip for selling more than $115,000 of Avon products in 2005. Lattime has been an Avon representative since 1991.
SERVICE CREDIT UNION has hired new staff members in two of its branches within the Seacoast region. The Service Credit Union’s corporate offices in Portsmouth hired LISA TOWER and GAIL DAVIS as real estate loan specialists. PETER CRONSHAW was hired as courier.
In Rochester, JOSEPH CASALE was hired as manager of the special accounts department.
Service Credit Union is a full service financial institution, operating 12 branches in Germany, nine in New Hampshire and one in Massachusetts.
Attorney RUSSELL HILLIARD of UPTON & HATFIELD, LLP, Portsmouth office, has been elected chair of the New Hampshire Bar Foundation Board of Directors.
Hilliard served as vice-chair of the Bar Foundation during the past year and has served on the board of directors since 2001, with a one year sabbatical in 2004. Hilliard was elected chair for a two-year term. Hilliard is the past president (2003-2004) of the New Hampshire Bar Association. He is chair of the New Hampshire Legislative Ethics Committee and a member of the American Arbitration Association: Panel of Arbitrators, Merrimack County Bar and a former member of the NH Public Employees Labor Relations Board. As a partner at Upton & Hatfield, he practices law in the area of litigation, commercial law, insurance law, and mediation.
MEAGAN BUCKLEY, Alzheimer’s program director for SUNBRIDGE CARE AND REHABILITATION in Portsmouth, recently completed specialized training on how to care for and effectively interact with those who have Alzheimer’s disease and related memory disorders. The 36-hour course is designed to help Alzheimer’s program directors understand the principles of care and the ways to identify the symptoms and behaviors associated with dementia. The program also provided tips on developing community relations, and involving family members with Alzheimer’s patients.
ALBERT BLAKE JR. of NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL FINANCIAL NETWORK in Hampton earned the honor of attending the 2006 Million Dollar Round Table annual meeting in San Diego. Blake is an eaight-year round table member and was among 7,000 round table members, special guests and speakers from more than 60 nations who were in attendance at the meeting. State-of-the-art life insurance and financial services concepts and methods of improving client service were among the topics presented. Experts in such areas as estate planning, taxes, business and law shared their knowledge during workshops and general sessions.
WILLIAM YOUNG, FEDERAL SAVINGS BANK senior vice president, announces the addition of PAUL BERGERON to the bank’s commercial lending team. Bergeron, who will work out of the bank’s main office in Dover, will serve as vice president of commercial lending. Graduating from Plymouth State College with a degree in business administration, Bergeron furthered his education and later earned a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Southern New Hampshire’s Graduate School of Business. He has more than 20 years in the financial industry. An active volunteer for the United Way of the Greater Seacoast as well as Junior Achievement Programs, he enjoys taking part in educating and inspiring young people to value free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. A resident of Candia, he enjoys biking and spending time with his family.

Since closing Swing In Golf in February, BOB SHEESLEY has joined HATCHLING STUDIOS in Portsmouth as their bnusiness development manager. Some of his duties include sales and marketing, travel to trade shows, public relations, and building awareness for Hatchling in major markets such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. His background has included work in advertising and talent consulting.
NEW HAMPSHIRE COMMUNITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE STRATHAM has hired DIANE STRADLING of Portsmouth as its new director of alumni, development and marketing. Stradling, former director of several area nonprofit organizations, is a community impact volunteer for United Way of the Greater Seacoast and a member of the Community Resource Network. She will be responsible for creating an alumni association, raising funds for scholarships, developing a capital campaign to enlarge the Portsmouth campus located on Pease International Tradeport and increasing the community’s awareness of the only state-supported community college serving eastern Rockingham and Strafford Counties.
