Awards

NEWINGTON ENERGY LIMITED's power generation plant has earned membership in the prestigious Star Voluntary Protection Program of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The Newington plant is owned by ConEd Development and is operated by General Electric Services. The plant and its 24 workers join a corps of about 1,400 workplaces nationwide that have earned the Star designation. Requirements for the designation include implementing programs and procedures beyond those required under OSHA standards. OSHA inspectors also base their judgments on the plant's safety and health program, employee interviews, and a work site inspection.

JSA INC. OF PORTSMOUTH has been awarded a Gold Achievement Award by the National Association of Home Builders 50 and over Housing Council. The award was presented during the 2006 Best of Seniors Housing Awards ceremony. The company was recognized for its work on The Ridge at RiverWoods. A 13-member panel of architects, builders, and designers based its decision on innovative architecture, interior design, and how effective the response was to the housing demands of seniors.

SIMPLY THE BEST TANNING Salon has been named as one of the Top 250 salons in the nation by LOOKING FIT MAGAZINE. The publication chose Simply the Best Tanning based on professionalism, commitment to education, and customer service. This is the second year in a row the company has been named to the list. Simply the Best Tanning Salon has salons in North Hampton and Hampton Falls.

BRESETTE & COMPANY of Portsmouth received 17 awards at the THIRD ANNUAL SERVICES INDUSTRY ADVERTISING AWARDS. More than 1,500 entries were evaluated by a national panel of judges. Entries were judged based on execution, creativity, quality, consumer appeal, and overall breakthrough advertising content. The company was recognized for advertisements in print and electronic media. Examples of prize-winning work included advertisements created for Seacoast Rejuvenation Center, Wentworth Douglas Hospital, and Profile bank.

BELLA INTIMATES, located in Rye, has been listed on OPRAH WINFREY'S Web site as one of the top 100 bra fitters in the country. Owner SHELLY MANOUGIAN has been a fitter for the last 15 years and prides herself for not needing to use a tape measure. She instinctively knows what size a client is and can suggest what style bra will work best for her.

Acquisitions

DIRECT CAPITAL CORPORATION (DCC), a leading national equipment and technology lessor, headquartered in Portsmouth, is pleased to announce the acquisition of DIRECT MORTGAGE SERVICES, Inc. (DMS). DMS is one of the country's leading mortgage providers with offices located in Portsmouth, Naugatuck, Conn., and Bradenton, Fla. DMS will soon be offering mortgage products in all 50 states. DMS will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary, under the same management team led by its president, Joe Adamaitis. Direct Capital and Direct Mortgage Services have begun to promote the expanded financial products now available to their clients.

Coming and Going

THE HIDEAWAYS PLAZA in Portsmouth has welcomed new tenant ELEMENTS Martial Arts. The new business will offer courses in Tai Chi, Karate, and Cardio Kickboxing. Hideaways Plaza is owned by the Install Realty Trust and is home to Hideaways International, Flowers by Leslie, and the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Center.

THE PORTSMOUTH BOOKSHOP in Portsmouth has transitioned to a Web-based business in Dover. BRIAN DIMARBRO has sold the Islington Street location to STEPHEN KELM of Eliot, a private developer. Kelm plans to keep the property commercial, according to DiMambro. DiMambro's business is now International Book Sales, Inc., a Internet-based business located in Dover. He still deals in antique and rare books, but entirely over the Web. DiMambro has sold books in Portsmouth for more than 20 years, 10 of them out of the Islington Street location. The change from retail to Internet was part of a three-year process to reduce expenses.

Construction

LEAD SOURCE, a lead asbestos removal company in Dover, announces that it will be the first in the state distributing Anabec NB30. The chemical is a mold preventative used in new construction. When sprayed during the construction phase, it combats mold for 30 years and gives protection to contractors against sick building liability.

DeSTEFANO ARCHITECTS of Portsmouth recently completed the renovation of CENTRIX BANK's new 163 Deer St. branch. Centrix's new office building formerly housed the Genip Tree cafe. The firm concentrated on changing the facade of the building as well as modifying the interior for bank use.

Portsmouth based JSN ASSOCIATES, Inc. has been selected by THE MUSIC HALL to manage the stair buttressing portion of the hall's major restoration project. The 128-year old music hall is the oldest in New Hampshire and the second oldest in New England. Due to age, the hall's two main staircases suffer from deflections and are now sloping. JSN will reinforce the stairs with steel beams hidden in the existing wood framing.

NETTA HART of COASTAL ACUPUNCTURE AND WELLNESS in Greenland will be one of the first acupuncturists in the region offering microcurrent facial rejuvenation. The procedure, featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, involves low level electrical stimulation to the face and neck area. This produces tighter skin and reduces wrinkles. Hart is a graduate of the New England School of Acupuncture and the University of New Hampshire. She specializes in women's issues and pain syndromes. Hart is a resident of Greenland.

WARM SPIRIT, a unique direct-sales company that supplies herbal beauty products through a nationwide network of more than 20,000 consultants, announced record-breaking revenues for 2005. Boosted by end-of-year sales, the company recorded income for 2005 that reached nearly $15 million, said Warm Spirit President, CEO and co-founder NADINE THOMPSON. "Last year was a phenomenal period of growth and greatness," said Thompson. "At the beginning of 2005 we set a year-end goal to reach monthly sales totals of $1 million. We accomplished that goal in March—just three months!"

Health Care

DR. LAWRENCE GRAY of PORTSMOUTH REGIONAL HOSPITAL was published in The Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Dr. Gray's article, titled Reevaluating Liposuction Breast Reduction, appeared in the February issue and discusses the refinements and improvements for the procedure.

THE VETERINARY EMERGENCY & SPECIALTY HOSPITAL is now open in BRENTWOOD for emergency care of domestic and exotic pets. The new hospital is equipped with on-site MRI, digital radiography, and ultrasound services. Owners DR. TIM LAMPMAN and DR. SELVI LAMPMAN designed the hospital for on-site animal treatment for fracture repairs, soft tissue surgeries, and elective orthopedic procedures. Future plans for the facility include the hiring of a veterinary neurologist and the addition of a ophthalmologist this summer.

High Tech

PixelMEDIA, Inc. announces that Cbeyond has extended its partnership with the company for the fifth consecutive year. Cbeyond has worked with PixelMedia since 2001. Recent projects between the two include an upcoming sales and prospect referral program. PixelMEDIA designed the program to generate leads from Cbeyond's partners and customers. PixelMEDIA is a full service Internet firm located in Portsmouth. Cbeyond is an Atlanta-based managed service and a Voice over IP provider.

O'BRIEN GRASSO RE Software, a Seabrook-based soft-ware company, plans to release a new property management software package. The product, titled Property Master, is aimed at landlords and real estate investors. Features include organization of information regarding properties, tenants, units and expenses. BRENDAN O'BRIEN, the founder of the company, came up with the idea after difficulties managing his own property investments. This is the company's first product release since it was founded a year and a half ago.

LONZA, a biopharmaceutical company, has approved a new expansion plan for its manufacturing facility at the Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth. The company will expand its facility for the second time by 250,000 additional square feet. Lonza hopes that the expansion will accommodate expected high customer demand for delivering new midscale bioreactor capacity. Lonza is currently the largest tenant at Pease International. Construction for the project is set to begin this spring.

New Products

THE LOLLIPOP TREE, a specialty food manufacturer located in Portsmouth, announces the addition of Honey Bourbon Barbecue Grilling & Glazing Sauce and Parmesan Pizza Monkey Bread Mix to its specialty food line. The company donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Monkey Bread to HEIFER PROJECT INTERNATIONAL, an organization working to end global hunger.

Real Estate

THE KANE COMPANY in Portsmouth announced the completion of three recent transactions involving BRADY SULLIVAN, GLOBAL RELIEF TECHNOLOGIES, and SHORELINE CONSTRUCTION. A 210,000 square foot industrial and office property was brokered to Brady Sullivan of Manchester, an investment firm that plans on making renovations. Global Relief Technologies is subleasing an 8,000 square foot office building from Ingersoll- Rand at the Pease Tradeport. Finally, a 11,500 square foot industrial building was brokered to Shoreline Construction of Eliot, Maine. Shoreline will use the space to increase its production facilities.
